Today was the first day of MHSAA sanctioned practice with the regular season now less than three weeks away. Under the direction of eight year head coach Owen Miller, Gulfport is searching for its first state title since 2014 without the services of future division I football signee Derick Hall.
In his place, the Admirals have built a core around their class of 2020 to go along with their standard of loft ambitions. Power forward/center Nate Hudson said, “I worked with Derick last year a lot. I learned a lot from him, and I plan on taking all of the responsibility that he had, dominating down low, getting rebounds, blocking shots, getting buckets.”
Coach Miller said, “Great to be a part of it, great to be a part of those expectations, but got a lot of guys back for this year’s team. We played seven sophomores last year, those guys are juniors now. And then we return a couple seniors, we’ve only got three seniors. So I really like this team. They’re fun to be around, they’re learners, they’re unselfish and that’s fun to be around as a coach when you’ve got a lot of guys that want to learn and are unselfish.”
The Admirals will tip off the new campaign with an October 27th jamboree against Stone High School at Bert Jenkins Gymnasium. The regular season opener ... Click here to read full article
